The first thing the surgeon must do before undergoing a Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), is to take a look at your hair, pay special attention to its growth and loss, and also check your family history and ask about any previous Hair Restoration surgery. It is important to be healthy and avoid taking medications that could increase bleeding, such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements. Also, the patient should not have medical conditions that could interfere in the surgery or healing process, preferably be a non-smoker and have realistic expectations about the procedure. Transplant Techniques: FUT vs FUE
The ultimate technique for Hair Restoration is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). In this procedure, individual follicles are transplanted, providing a more natural look. Previous techniques used to transplant hair tuffs (punch-grafts), resulting in a doll's hair appearance. In the strip method (FUT) a strip of scalp is removed under local anesthesia. This piece of scalp tissue is then cut in to small pieces of tissue called grafts. The grafts are carefully prepared with the help of microscopes, ensuring survival of 95% of the hair follicles removed from the donor area. The grafts are then transplanted back in to the thinning area of the patients head. This method will leave a linear scar in the donor area, which should be covered by a patients hair. The different between FUE and FUT methods is the way the hair is removed; the grafts are implanted in the same way.
